Travel Walks: Former Konpira Grand Theater, Kanamaruza (October 2026)

On a rainy day with no performance on, I visited Kanamaruza, Japan's oldest surviving kabuki theatre. I stood on the hanamichi, went beneath the stage to the toya, listened to the rain in an empty dressing room. A solo visit that let the building itself shine.

Travel Walks: Former Konpira Grand Theater, Kanamaruza Route Map (October 2026)

From Takamatsu-Chikko Station to Kotohira on the Kotoden line, then up the slope to Kanamaruza. Inside: the hanamichi, the dressing rooms, the naraku, the toya, the upstairs seats. A rainy-day visit, traced in photos in the order I walked. Best read with the main article.

Kabuki

Shikoku Konpira Grand Kabuki: Part 1 & Part 2 (April 2024)

My first time at the Kanamaru-za, Japan's oldest playhouse, for the 37th Shikoku Konpira Grand Kabuki. Laughs from Somegoro and Koshiro, Jakuemon's hand-powered flying scene right beside the hanamichi — and somehow I didn't eat a thing all day. A back-to-back solo day out.
