March Program at the Minamiza Theatre: Pre-Curtain Notes (March 2026)

Minamiza's "Hanagata Kabuki Special Performance" features a role-swapping production. I cheerfully bought tickets to both the Matsu and Sakura casts — only to find myself nervous about Kazutaro in a male role… A pre-show notebook of the jitters before opening day.

A Tabletop Journey: Osoba Horai (December 2025)

A tiny counter-only soba shop down a Gion alley, Osoba Horai. The star is the nine-compartment appetizer treasure box. From sashimi and spring rolls to soba with plenty of condiments and an ice-cream monaka finish, this is a solo tabletop journey in the order each dish arrived.

No tickets for me this year, but just seeing the maneki boards up at the Minamiza was enough to make me giggle. A mini report on the sign that winter has come to Kyoto.

Kaomise at Kyoto’s Minamiza Theatre: Evening Program (December 2023)

The Evening Show of the Minamiza kaomise celebrating Ichikawa Danjuro XIII's name succession: Nizaemon's sublime Yuranosuke, a Stage Announcement that nearly made me cry, and the whole audience shouting "Naritaya!" together.
