A little different from the usual kabuki… Tamasaburo Bando and Nizaemon Kataoka, up on stage just talking — what a luxurious event. Is it really all right to spend the New Year like this? As always, today was the best.
Not kabuki, but the box seats
This Minamiza New Year special pairs a talk with a Cinema Kabuki screening. The guest was Nizaemon, so I bought a ticket right away.
It wasn’t kabuki, but since I’d come all this way, I went for the box seats (sajiki). Easy to see, as always.
Their shared history and warm personalities came through in every exchange. The way Tamasaburo called out to Nizaemon felt almost like a long-married couple.
Tamasaburo so elegant, Nizaemon so charming.
A glimpse of the unguarded back-and-forth between two people you usually only see up on stage… these moments, too, are something special.
