“The Tale of Genji: The Lady of Rokujo” – I really wanted to see this at the Kabukiza, but I could not get a ticket. I had pretty much given up, and then came the happy news that it would screen as Cinema Kabuki! And once I watched it, I just ended up wanting to see it live all over again. Completely backwards, I know. But once again, today was the best.
Somegoro as Hikaru Genji, oh my
Cinema Kabuki lets you watch a recording of a stage performance up on the big screen. This one is the Kabukiza run from October 2024 that sold out day after day. Rokujo no Miyasudokoro is played by Tamasaburo, and Hikaru Genji by Somegoro. Well, no wonder it sold out…
And Somegoro as Hikaru Genji was just too good-looking. Is there anyone alive who would not fall for him? On a big cinema screen, with that sound, even the smallest shifts of expression come through clearly, which was a real treat. I walked in carrying the frustration of not getting to see it live, and by the time it ended, my “I really wish I had seen this at the Kabukiza!” had only been supersized. Thank you – but what am I supposed to do with this feeling now (laugh).
Awaiting a revival at the Kabukiza.
A little detour
The rooftop of the building the cinema sits in turned out to be full of Pokemon. Pikachu in the grass, Pichu on a bench. I had come to watch Cinema Kabuki, and got happily held up for a while.

On the way home, I stopped at Taneya in the basement of the Hankyu Umeda department store for an anmitsu: shiratama dumplings, agar jelly, and soft serve. Perfection.
