Castle Hopping: Himeji Castle Route Map (October 2026)
This route map traces the path I walked around Himeji Castle in photos. From Himeji Station through the Ote-mon Gate, into the keep, past stone walls with their legends, along the Hyakken Roka corridor, through the Ru-no-Mon Gate down to the Sangoku Moat, finishing next door at Kokoen Garden. Here it is, in the order I walked it.

Suggested TimeAbout 5 hours for Himeji Castle and Kokoen Garden (my visit, taking time to explore and take photos)
NotesShoes must be removed inside the main keep, also inside the Hyakken Roka. A shoe bag is handed out at the entrance (you can take it home). Water servers plus coin lockers are available on the grounds.
Solo Visit NoteThere were no vending machines near the keep, so make sure you bring plenty to drink (there are water servers on the grounds too). You'll walk a lot. Add a loop around the inner moat, your step count will go through the roof, so comfortable shoes are a must.
