A Tabletop Journey: Coppie (March 2026)

こぴゑのポテサラ Solo Gourmet

The shock of my first visit stuck with me, and before I knew it I was back. Coppie, in Takatsuji, Kyoto — round two, and just as wonderful. This time, I am taking you through the meal dish by dish, in the order it arrived, on a little Tabletop Journey. Yet again, today was the best.

What kind of place is Coppie?

Coppie is a mukokuseki (borderless, multinational) cuisine sakaba — a casual dining bar — in Takatsuji-Inokuma, Kyoto. The cooking blends countries and cultures, leaning generously on seasonal ingredients, fermented foods, spices, and herbs. In a word: impossible to categorize.

The seating is one long counter. The other guests were all chatting away happily, and the staff are warm — they will casually strike up a conversation with you. The comfort here is the real deal. It is reservation only, so book early.

This time I ordered a la carte, picking whatever caught my eye. I do not drink, so I went with the house-made ginger ale, which pairs beautifully with the food.

01

The Entrance

A white noren curtain glowing in the night. That unmistakably Kyoto look had me excited before I even stepped inside.

The Opener

Something smooth and white topped with firefly squid. One bite in, and we already had a winner.

The Rapeseed-Flower Dish

Spring nanohana in a blue floral bowl. The vessel is part of the dish too; it was honestly beautiful.

The Potato Salad★Star of the Day

This is the one I cannot forget. A grown-up flavor you will not find anywhere else. Expect ordinary potato salad, and it will catch you delightfully off guard.

House-Made Ginger Ale and Potato Salad

I did not drink, so I went with the house-made ginger ale. Clean, spicy, and a beautiful match for the food.

The Spring Roll

You wrap it in the white paper served alongside and eat it with your hands. I have a real soft spot for that kind of presentation.

The Onion

It looks like a slice of cake. But the truth is sweet onion. Being fooled, in the best way, with every bite was half the fun.

The Chinese Noodles

Pasta? No, I am fairly sure these were Chinese noodles. Right to the end, Coppie's borderless playfulness kept tricking the eye.

The Sorbet★The Finish

Two scoops, pink and yellow. Sitting together on the wooden plate, they looked a little like a face. Playful right down to the last bite.

Wrapping up

Coppie, the borderless-cuisine spot — round two, and just as satisfying. A la carte, no drinks, and still under 10,000 yen. A relaxed seat at the long counter, perfect for a table for one.

When I finished, I thought, “I want to come back right away!” Except I had already booked my next visit (ha). Even knowing I could return soon, it still makes you want to come back. That kind of place.
